We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast by Jonathan Safran Foer

emotional informative sad medium-paced

The crux of this book is citing reasons that it is imperative that humans eat less animal products if we want to make an impact on climate change. I, personally, eat a plant-based diet, but I know it is daunting for people to think about giving up meat and dairy. If you take nothing else from this book, take this: "Everyone will eat a meal relatively soon and can immediately participate in the reversal of climate change (1:55)... Instead of imagining all of the meals ahead of you, focus on the meal in front of you (3:22)." It's not a mind-blowing to say take small steps towards big changes, but I think a lot of people who promote a plant-based diet promote an all-or-none type of thinking and the average person can become easily overwhelmed at the idea of giving up animal products forever, especially if they are not super comfortable in the kitchen to begin. Foer cites statistics about how eliminating animal products from 1 meal a day will have a profound effect on the planet. I felt this book was approachable without being pushy and informative without being overly technical and dry.
