Cattle Stop by Kit Oliver

4.25

I’m not usually such a huge fan of plots driven by miscommunication, but I picked this book up and wasn’t able to put it down! It becomes clear early on that Whit is just as interested in Cooper as Cooper is in him, and it’s so much fun to watch them both agonize whilst knowing the truth as the reader. It’s a testament to Kit Oliver’s storytelling that this book remains so gripping the entire way through, despite the clear path their relationship is on. I found myself wanting to throttle both of them… in the best way? Their friendship-rivalry-romance is hot and funny, and an utter joy to struggle through with them. Also the smut is A+.

As a certified city-dweller myself, it was a surprise that I found a story about an old farm so enjoyable. Don’t mind me if I’m innocently browsing farmland listings. My only gripe with this book is the ending. Cooper focuses for so long on not being part of the “we”, and very little happens to change his perspective, apart from him and Whit admitting they love each other. I would have loved to see one more page about Cooper really being an integral part of the farm and the Penny, Drew, Whit squad. Also, I may have missed it, but I don’t think he fixed the spigot?!?!?

All in all, Cattle Stop is a funny, heartwarming, perfectly paced read. Any faults are negligible and nit-picky enough to not affect my rating. I can’t wait to read it again.
