Winter in Sokcho by Elisa Shua Dusapin

5.0

For me, it’s the smaller books (or what I call leaflets haha) that are just so stunning in style of writing and easy to read!

I really LOVED this book and was a perfect way to get my mind back into gear with reading! Especially after last week!

This little nugget of joy is based in Sokcho, the border of North and South Korea which is a tourist town, where in the background there is still war and tension despite the picturesque mountain landscape. The story follows an unnamed young French-Korean woman who works as a receptionist in a hotel.

The novel starts and ends with a French graphic novelist arriving to the hotel. And explores the pair’s relationship and their perspectives on Sokcho.

There’s just something about this book that draws me in and it’s partly because it’s so short, the writer gets straight to the point with no fuss of description. Like many books I’ve read this year, it’s truly a breath of fresh air.
