Cycle of the Werewolf by Stephen King
3.0

Actual rating 3.5

This was very nostalgic for me - being the source material for the 80's Corey Haim movie 'Silver Bullet' the first werewolf movie I ever saw - and it scared the bejeezuz out of me.

This short story packs a punch - delves straight into the action. While managing to get me to cringe, I didn't get the build of suspense and tension. Partly because I already knew the ending (thanks to the movie) and partly because it's so short leaving out all that building ambiance King is famous for.

I liked that the protagonist is wheelchair bound, brave and intelligent. Way to go for representation of diversity and an unlikely hero with depth.

The werewolf also find justification in its actions... however misguided. Plus it harkens back to the days of truly terrifying monsters - animal/human hybrids... not some hot stud with abs who magically transforms into an oversized dog. I like my monsters to defy nature - something about breaking all the rules flips a switch in my brain and adds to the fear.

Great ending.
