This was picked for a book club, so I didn't fully know what the book was about going into it. I was expecting a romance piece, but the mystery/legal main story was an unexpected surprise. While some of Kell's observations about her role as a defense attorney rang true to me (as a defense attorney), it still had elements of overdramatized legal proceedings, which always removes me from the story.

I did not realize this book was also part of a planned trilogy, so I would echo other reviews that state this book gives you no closure whatsoever. In terms of the romance piece, Luke rubbed me the wrong way - he seemed very machismo & entitled as a male character, which really rubbed me the wrong way. This may be virtue of the times and/or small-town setting, but that definitely me cringe. The other thing that lowered my rating was that while I thought the story well-developed, the romance was not. It felt like immediately Luke & Kell were ravenous for each other and there was no build-up or development, which made it hard for me to buy in.
