I am probably not the target audience for this as it is categorized as “young adult,” and I am very much over the age of 25. The concepts were really neat; time travel, magic, subversion of heroism, and big ethical questions. However, all of these themes were rushed in favor of “the romance”. And it’s two teens who fall in love working together one summer, which is… well it’s like Romeo and Juliet. I suppose the teen characters make decisions that are frustratingly teen appropriate. I suspect if the plot of the book had been broken up into two books with more time for the character development to simmer it would have really worked for me.
