Elon Musk is maybe the greatest innovator of the modern age. I do not say this just because I am a big fan of the guy, but because a few private people have managed to make an impact on the world like he did. All of his companies from SpaceX to Tesla to Solar City and others were not trailblazers of some completely new fields, there were rockets before SpaceX, electric cars before Tesla and solar panels before Solar City. However, what makes each of these companies different is that they were able to completely revolutionize their respective fields with the power of pure innovation. SpaceX proved that rockets can be reused much like an aircraft and it could make launching cargo to space much cheaper. Tesla proved that electric cars shouldn't be slow, short-ranged, weird looking things and instead, they could be faster than traditional cars and can have a range of hundreds of miles in a single charge. Solar City proved that harnessing solar power for homes shouldn't just be this borderline-useful thing that could barely supplement a small fraction of your electricity bill and costs a fortune to set up, instead, it could be significantly cheaper, can be easily installed on your roof and can cover almost all of the electricity need of an average home.

Elon Musk is a man of innovation and in this biography, his full personality and worldviews come to life in great detail. Vance delves deep into Musk's childhood, his family, his personal life, and the numerous controversies that surrounded him. However, the most important thing that one can get out of this book is his vision and the perspective from which he looks at humankind. People often fail to see the part of Musk that lies beyond the tech-billionaire-and-Silicon-Valley-boss image. In a world of short-sighted leaders and entrepreneurs, Musk has taken upon himself to solve problems so great and fundamental but have escaped the thoughts of most people because they seem very far in the future. But the important thing is that he not only speaks about solving them, but he actually does the work.

By the end of the book, you might feel that Vance too sounds like any other Elon fan. But I think that it is reasonable, because this man deserves nothing less for the amazing things that he had done and the fantastic future that he had helped humanity to envision.
