Collecting Tears
by C.A. King
4 Stars
Collecting Tears is a novel in the Tomoiya’s Story series by C.A King. It is primarily a vampire story, but with a different, unique flare. Ms. King’s concept is a completely different take on the origin of Vampires and the myths that have been created. The story is a paranormal/fantasy adventure that contains drama, action and a little suspense.
Tomoiya is a smart, beautiful, graceful, strong and independent Princess; who also has a huge secret- something she hasn’t been able to share with anyone, for fear of the repercussions that would come with her revelation. She is a vampire- but because of the rumours, untruths and prejudices spread generations ago, vampire were reviled and hunted to the ends of the galaxy by ‘purifiers’- and even now all this time later the fear and prejudice against vampires still exists. They stay hidden in plain sight, never revealing their true selves. But there are constant reminders of how different they are.
Being a vampire princess come with a lot of rules…in fact a rule for every circumstance. Tomoiya has had to memorise them all. They are all for her safety, drummed into her by her loving, but very overprotective father. Her safety is his primary concern, as all they had were each other, since Tomoiya’s mother died when she was very young.
The story begins at Tomoiya’s graduation, where she and her best friend Moira have been made co-valedictorians. There is much excitement and a realisation that this is the completion of one part of their lives- and another is just about to begin. Tomoiya feels it is important to remember as much as she can about this point in her life; she doesn’t want to forget a moment.
The graduation party was the last opportunity to mingle with the friends she had made over the years, as soon they would all be heading in different directions to attend college and move on to the next phase of their lives. This was to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience and she was determined to have a lot of fun, having her best friend Moira there would make it all the more memorable.
But do you ever truly know anyone? After all everyone has secrets… Don’t they? This joyous celebration doesn’t quite turn out the way Tomoiya had envisioned. The night turns into tragedy, the gruesome details would haunt Tomoiya for the rest of her life. This traumatic event changes life as she knows it and sets off a chain of events that sees Tomoiya sent across the galaxy, to the dark side- to attend a secret college, where hopefully she will remain safe.
On top of all this, there is someone who is completely obsessed about her, who will do anything to make her his. He poses a huge danger to Tomoiya, especially if he were to discover her secret.
But the dark side of the galaxy has its own risks that would need to be considered and dealt with- but anything had to be safer than what she was fleeing from. Surely?
Will she make it to the dark side of the galaxy and safety? What is she running from? Who poses such a threat to her safety and why? What is the significance of her tears? And what of all her Teddy Bears? All this and more will be discovered when you read this brilliant story….
The story is really imaginative and beautifully written. The author has a flare for descriptive detailing and her words have created a unique and exciting ‘galaxy’ in which her story is set.
The characters have a real depth to their personalities- Ms. King lovingly crafting each one. Their quirks and flaws really add a lot of interest to the story.
A lot of the backstory is told in the form of flashbacks/memories and through Tomoiya’s internal dialogue. The book has a fast pace, reads smoothly and is a quick easy read.
The story continues in the next book, where I will definitely be following Tomoiya’s Story once again.
A great read.
Thank you Ms. King!
