This is a book for children so, of course, she can talk to rabbits. But dead beat hippie parents who didn't care and having to work when she was in grade 5 didn't make sense when current day themes were used.
Also I hope this book is translated from Rabbit into English English as the Canadian/American version had included a swear word - for what effect I can not say. If the author is going to use a word that is not in her region's vernacular she should understand what it is she is using.
