captwinghead 's review for:
The Grownup
by Gillian Flynn
This is an incredibly short story.
I don't know how to feel about the ending? And I think that's the point.
You really get a feel for the main character although they remain unnamed throughout the entire story. They've lived a pretty rough life and have developed the belief that life is a series of transactions. You give someone something and they give you something in return; no hard feelings. Of course someone enters their life and makes them question that because all stories like this eventually turn out that way.
However, the journey was still entertaining. The tone of this book, especially the scene where the narrator first enters the Carterhook mansion, is so easy to immerse yourself in. I got chills just reading the descriptions and their first meeting with Miles.
The twist was a surprise. I definitely knew something was coming but I was still surprised. I love Flynn's books for that very reason. You expect something isn't as it seems, you tell yourself you know exactly what it is and when the twist comes, you get mad at yourself for not seeing it.
Even saying that, the ending was a bit weak for me. Still, this is a definitely a recommend.
