The Leftover Woman by Jean Kwok

challenging mysterious sad tense slow-paced

4.0

This is a shorty, at just 288 pages. I struggled to stay fully invested for the first bit, but the last 100 pages was unputdownable. Basically it took me a week to read the first 175 pages and an hour to read the last 100. You know what I mean? ⁣

THE LEFTOVER WOMAN is a domestic drama that tackles many hard themes: abuse, motherhood, racism, classism, adoption, immigration… And also shows a little glimpse into the complexity of the consequences of China’s one child policy. ⁣

The first 2/3 of the book was about 3.5 stars for me, the last third was 4.5 stars, so I’m settling on 4 stars.
