This was definitely the slowest burn of the series. I was unsure at the beginning if I could see Serenity and Hunter together, but it didn’t take long to realize they were perfect for each other. Although Serenity had lived a morally grey life, she was starting over and had an air of innocence about her. And while Serenity quickly fell for Hunter, it took him a bit longer to realize the depth of his feelings for Serenity.
Hunter and Serenity had a bit of a rocky start with Hunter pushing Serenity away, but it ended up strengthening their relationship in the long run. They started their relationship as friends and that gave them a chance to really get to know each other, especially while Serenity was staying with Hunter. I loved her acceptance of all of Hunter’s scars. She never held his lack of a limb against him and even joked with him about it. That alone made me fall a little for Serenity.
Hunter was a great MMC. He was grumpy and grouchy and refused to let people in. But his close relationship with Bryce helped him get out of his own way when it came to Serenity. I will say his actions at Vera’s wedding didn’t make him look great, but it did clear up a lot of baggage for him. After the wedding it seemed like Hunter really leaned into his feelings for Serenity and he made sure she knew it.
This was a great end to this series. I loved the small flash forward in the epilogue. Hunter and Serenity definitely ended the series with a heartfelt bang.
