World Without End
by Ken Follett
This is a fairly satisfying sequel to Pillars of the Earth, and was turning out to be a pretty good (i.e. lengthy, immersive, and distinctly medieval) pandemic read.... until the Plague hit. People start debating about whether or not to wear face masks, the town goes into quarantine, and the death toll mounts. Religious nuts squabble with merchants, who worry about declining revenue, while the leadership dithers. Class warfare rumbles below the surface, but the rich prevail. Is this my escapist novel or the d@mn daily news?! Okay fine, I’ll read the next one, another 900 pages can’t hurt.
