I gotta be honest, this one was a bit of a let down.
I’ve always loved vampire stories, so when I saw this one recommended as one of the BEST vampire stories ever told, I scooped it up so fast. But I never felt connected to it.
For one, the characters where so underdeveloped. The author would start these rich backstories and then leave them unfinished. You’re dealing with vampires who have lived for CENTURIES, but you can’t unpack their relationships a bit more?
The central plot line was chaotic. I felt like the author never was quite sure where she wanted to go. There was so much potential in every facet of this book, but it was always slightly out of reach.
I do think it might translate better to the screen. In TV format, there would be so much more opportunity to flesh out the details and really build on this idea of Coldtowns. It was such a cool concept and I really, really wanted to love it, but in the end, it gave me the book equivalent of blue balls.
