Jasmine Bashara never signed up to be a hero. She just wanted to get rich

Artemis is a novel I picked up randomly from my library. My decision was mostly based on the name being similar to artms (K-pop group). The name has not much relevance. It is the name of the town and was inspired by the Greek goddess. No Greek myth retellings.

The reason I kept on reading the book was its themes. Its premise feels almost dystopian. Jasmine has to do shitty things in order to get payment. She has no home. She only has a coffin.

I'm not sure if I liked how the story concluded those themes. I guess Jasmine's final decision showed she’d want to stay on the moon rather than be rich. This was her main goal at the beginning. I didn’t think of that at first but after finishing it I realized it. It was just saddening to me. The conflict of her barely making it by never stopped. It seems to be things will just get worse.

The characters were in slightly morally grey territory. Hated all the rich people though. I still rooted for Jasmine the whole time. She was only a result of capitalism. It was realistic how she didn’t always get away with things. I loved Dale and Jazz's dad as well. They all felt like very real people. For better or worse.

I liked the letters between Kevin and Jasmine. I would’ve preferred if she had never gotten with a guy at all. There wasn’t even any chemistry between her and that one guy. If it were anyone it should’ve been Kevin. Some of the science confused me. I'm just new to sci-fi.

I want to give one of his other novels a try but I don’t know if I’ll get to it.
