I was very lucky to receive an ARC for this absolutely WONDERFUL book! I’m pretty sure this is going in my top five books of 2021 because it was just that good to me. I loved the two main characters so much. Their arcs were very well crafted and who they were in the beginning is wildly different than the end because they learned and grew so much through the story. This is definitely a character driven novel and it really takes its time and is dedicated to moments that showcase their personalities, pasts that made them who they are, what they desire most, what they fear most, and how they are perfect for one another despite their flaws. You get both POV’s and i think it was very well done. Usually when there is POV shifts you end up liking one voice better...or even worse you cant even tell the difference between their voices. But this was very well balanced, the voices were distinct, and I think it would have really suffered if you didn’t have both of their perspectives. This reverse Beauty and the Beast retelling was an absolute smash hit for me. This book has:
-a con artist crime family
-a support group for cursed individuals
-fake dating trope, hurt/comfort trope
-political intrigue
-LGBTQ+ representation that felt meaningful (there’s a sapphic romance c plot and a non-binary major supporting character)
-POC representation (I’m white so I’m not sure how qualified I am to say whether it was good or not )
-an absolutely chaotic celebration that involves an ostrich, a questionable mandolin song, a drunk priest, and a LOT of chaos.
-a slow burn romance that will charm the pants right off you

I cannot express enough how much I enjoyed this absolute romp! This was a “stay up until 4am reading just one more chapter until...well I might as well just finish it” read for me it was THAT good!
