This book helped me understand the joke about how cis het white men are always thinking about ancient Rome. It also helped me understand the mentality of the type of guy who calls himself a libertarian despite having little interest in personal freedom because he thinks it sounds better than saying he’s a Republican.
This book used many examples from the trials and tribulations of historical figures. Those who overcame the odds and triumphed. What did they have in common? Nearly every one was a white, cis, heterosexual, wealthy man! I believe only one woman was mentioned and only one Black man. These cursory examples were described as having an extra challenge due to societal bias but that to the true Stoic these were not challenges at all but opportunities! Institutional racism and sexism are benefits because they give you that extra push to succeed. Geez, if only all of us feminists, freedom fighters, and social justice warrior had read this book sooner, our job’s done!
The nicest thing I can say about this book is that it is basically a love letter to Stoicism. The worst thing I can say about this book is that the author seems to have a boot strap fetish. Failing in life or business? Keep pulling those boot straps till you’re laughing all the way to the bank. Boot straps finally rip right off? Hand them to Daddy Capitalism and take those licks with a smile.
