The Sign of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle
4.0
The Sign of Four is the best of Conan Doyle's longer Sherlock Holmes books. I know Hound of the Baskervilles gets a lot of love but Sherlock himself is hardly in it. This story has Sherlock on the case from the beginning. The Indian backstory is also far more fun than the tedious stuff in Utah from 'A Study in Scarlet' and Jonathan Small is a genuinely memorable character and not entirely an out-and-out villain, even if he is part of two murders.
Indeed, the whole set-up from the moment Mary Morstan turns up and we then meet the eccentric Thaddeus Sholto the story rattles along at a good pace.
We - and Watson and Holmes - have much amusement at the expense of Inspector Athelney Jones, who Sherlock has scant regard for.
You get to see Watson fall in love. You get to see both Toby, the dog and The Baker Street Irregulars in action and perhaps most of all this story is tense and exciting or to use a single word where four won't do it's fun.
A fine book, which has made me want to re-read the whole Sherlock stories again.
