I really enjoy Elin Hilderbrand books. They're great quick, easy reads, and they usually have enjoyable characters and storylines. I think one of my favorite things about them is that throughout most of her books (which typically take place on Nantucket), many of the same characters pop up around town - the real estate agents, restaurant owners, etc. However, it's been about a year since the last time I read an Elin Hilderbrand novel, so I honestly cannot remember if that was the case in this book. And it honestly has nothing to do with the book itself. So on to the real review...
This book is about two twin sisters who are so identical their parents can't even physically tell them apart, but who have completely opposite personalities. In a very Parent Trap-esque storyline, when Tabitha and Harper are starting college, their parents get divorced. They both want to go with their dad, a blue-collar electrician (or maybe a plumber... something like that), but because their parents are apparently evil, they make them choose which twin will live with each parent and decide it amongst themselves which one will live with their dad, and which will live with their snooty fashion designer mother who is self-entitled and needs a reality check. Fast forward 20 or so years and Harper and Tabitha couldn't be more different people based on the college years and after that they spent living with their separate parent. Harper, on Martha's Vineyard, is chill and down to Earth. She's had a lot of professional issues, and hasn't exactly made stellar life choices, but she's at least got the basics of her life in order, like she knows how to cook a meal. Tabitha on Nantucket, is basically a 97 year-old stuck in the body of a 40 year old. She has a stick up her ass the size of Montana, she's the worst mother on God's green Earth, and she doesn't have the basic common sense to not completely tank her mother's fashion boutique, because she's so snotty and disrespectful to potential customers. Both twins have abysmal love lives because of their terrible life choices. Tabitha also blames Harper for her child dying, even though Harper has NOTHING to do with why Tabitha's child died years and years before.
Tabitha is the worst. The book is supposed to be about how these sisters who are so different, start to put their differences aside and live in the other's shoes for a while so that they can make up with each other. But really, it's just about how Tabitha is a pathetic bitch who is incredibly immature, and how much she treats Harper like dirt, despite the fact that Harper is a way better person than Tabitha is. Tabitha never really redeems herself, and in the end, everyone falls in love with pretty good guys that they (or at least Tabitha) don't deserve.
I really did enjoy the book and the journey it took me on, but geez, was Tabitha terrible. Not a single redeeming quality.
