魔道祖师 [Mó Dào Zǔ Shī] by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
3.0

After watching and enjoying the tv adaptation, I was really excited to read the novel, because a lot of budget constraints and odd plot details seemed a bit off, so I expected the novel to give more contect and meaning to the show, while wanting to enjoy the story in its original shape.
And indeed, almost all things I found odd in the series made more sense, the writing was pleasant and I do believe that the character writing, especially for side characters is really good. A few things I found strange in the writing style, but due to it being a translation I want to disregard that, as I cannot judge if these issues were present when read in the original language.
My main fault with the book, which is a pleasant and enjoyable read, is that the additional chapters after the story itself ends were rather off-putting. Apart from more than half being basically smut fanfiction written by the author herself, only very few of the chapters really gave the fanservice and pleasant addition that I believe was intended. While I know the feeling of being left hanging after spending so much time with such an extensive story and was delighted to see how some of the characters would fare after the novel's conclusion, the additional chapters (for me personally) did not only fail to provide interesting continuations for the individual characters but managed to diminish my excitement for additional content and also somewhat tainted the positive impression I had of the main novel.
