The Original Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

5.0

This novel is the womb in which modern science fiction was born, and I spent the whole of my life thinking I knew precisely what it was about. I could not have been more wrong. This is not a story about science challenging God or man breaking laws he ought not.

The fantastical elements of this story, as in any good science fiction story, are mere vehicles for a story that is very human at its core. I was delighted to find that Frankenstein was the villain of the story, and his monster perhaps the tenderest creature to ever exist. The epistolary frame enhanced everything that was right about this novel.

If you think you know Frankenstein but have never read it, the chances are very good that you do not know Frankenstein at all and are missing out on a much better novel than all the pop culture references would lead you to believe. You should read this book.
