A Cruel and Fated Light
by Ashley Shuttleworth
3.5/5
I really loved the first book in the series and rushed to get to the next one as soon as I finished but unfortunately this book fell incredibly flat for me. It moved incredibly slowly with only small bursts of action, and then we had to replay each event from everyone else’s perspectives.
I also found the writing to be much worst than the first. The random pop culture references became obnoxious at a certain point, and while I love the diverse case of sexuality and gender identities, there was far too much rambling that just felt like it was trying to shove stuff in for the sake of it. Why are we getting an explanation of pansexuality in the middle of a love confession instead of just trusting the reader to know one of the most well known sexualities?
Unfortunately these things kept breaking my immersion and I really struggled to enjoy this book which is a let down after how much I enjoyed the first and was excited for a more modern take on the fae.
I will probably still attempt the next book but it’ll be much more susceptible to being DNFed if it’s not a smoother read.
