The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers
5.0

5 perfect stars

Absolute perfection. 800 pages that I never wanted to end. I took my time, savoring this book. And my patience paid off. I love Ailey Pearl Garfield. She is forever on my most beloved character list. Her story, her growth, is simply phenomenal! I wanted to be her sister, her ancestor, her friend. In my mind, we are all of the above.

At 800 pages, this book may intimidate some, but it’s such an engaging and all-consuming read, you WANT to settle in for a 2-3 hour reading session. Just to spend some more time with these characters and their stories. Such strong and memorable characters. Some I loathed and some I championed for. Some I cried for. I’m bowled over at how much I loved these characters.

Historically speaking this story jumps back and forth in time. I have to admit, this is one of my fav storytelling formats; a story broken into two halves that slowly twine together in the middle! I love it! Jumping from present day and back to the beginning of Ailey Pearl’s lineage just strengthened my love for Ailey. I knew her, I understood her, because I was so intimate with her entire line. Their lives, loves, losses and triumphs. Fully fleshed out family tree, epic in scale!

So clearly, Ms. Honorée Jeffers wanted to lay us out with this epic tome of hers. This debut novel is chalk full of history, coming of age, ancestral ties, tragedies, hope, dreams and family, all through the lens of W.E.B Du Bois’ ‘double consciousness’! Complicated perfection.

So much to comment on this book, so lil review space. This is a must read! A forever classic!
