If Looks Could Kill by Julie Berry
4.5

A classic fairytale we all long for: the poisonous behaviors of men bring about their own destruction, carried out by the very women they seek to violate. 'Tis always the era for feminine rage, and these women will achieve their retribution. In the gaslamp city of Gotham (NYC), circa 1888, we follow two young girls in the newly arrived Salvation Army who are determined to help, by either soup or sermons, the poor of the city. They are unaware (though not for long) of two mythic entities, Jack the Ripper and Medusa, playing their game of cat-and-mouse among these very streets. This story is steeped in history with a dash of the supernatural; a power clash of faith and divinity in multiple forms. As our omniscient view narrows in on impending, bloody rapture, it's inevitable that everyone will get what they deserve.
