Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

5.0

Despite its surface-level simplicity, there’s something absolutely bewitching and purely addictive about Rooney’s writing style. Her storytelling is complex and compelling without being over the top nor ostentatious - here’s to the power of understatement. “Conversations with friends” shares the same strengths as “Normal people”, especially in the depiction of raw and unadulterated characters and the true nature of toxic or damaged relationships. One of Rooney’s strongest suits is also being able to write poignant and effective dialogues that never read as forced or affected. The bottom line is: I love how simultaneously amusing and discomforting her stories are, they are often a punch in the gut but also a warm embrace - no in-between. Needles to say, “Conversations with friends” has solidified and strengthened my appreciation of Rooney.
