Honestly, I loved the characters and how their relationship developed gradually, but this book didn't make me as emotionally invested as the the first three in the series. Gloam and Adam were really sweet and I was definitely rooting for them, but there wasn't as much tension to make it feel as intense as the other books. Gloam has already been captured, so the worst thing has already happened—there's little sense of urgency. Yes, Rig/Adam wants to free him, but he also remarks how it's mostly a waiting game until he can figure out how and get what he needs. So it feels like there was a significant part of the book that was "hurry up and wait" before suddenly things are happening! But wait, it's fine, false alarm. I'm assuming the inclusion of the (easily) escaped
cannabalistic cult
is a set up for another book, but it didn't have enough relevance here to feel warranted.

Despite some of the pacing issues, I did like the ways this advanced the story of the wider world and set the stage for future books and character interactions. I adore Ghost and Aury, so I was pleased to see them. I appreciated Rig and Ghost's friendship and that Aury and Gloam got to have meaningful connections from beings from their own world when they'd been isolated for so long. I'm definitely looking forward to more books from this series!
