This series is sort of a guilty pleasure. Not guilty because it isn't good (it is quite good) or well written (the writing is also quite good), but rather because I usually don't enjoy romance in books. Especially straight romance. But for some reason, I liked it in this series. It wasn't too much. It didn't take away from the mystery and detective work.
Elly Griffiths has created complex and lovable characters. The Crossing Places is an interesting and mysterious start to a great series. I read this and it's sequels via Audiobook, read by Jane McDowell. She really brought the book to life and kept me hooked with her narration.
