Capitalism and Slavery by Eric Williams
4.0
it’s always interesting to read marxism before the cultural turn of the 60s and 70s. this was a great marxist history of the slave trade. it was massively broad stroked but in a way that i found quite compelling. so much of history books these days are hyper focused, and while i think that’s often good practice it can also keep conversation from ever trying to track larger movements and trends in history. of course, given the time it was written, williams approaches this economic history with almost a complete dismissal of culture, which i think is an oversight.
