Really unique book. There is mysticism/spirituality, along with a murder mystery combined with fantasy. The main character is a "Death Eater" and can save people (but only once) on the verge of dying. Her cousin is a "scryer" and can see the future. Her grandmother is a witch. And yes, it takes place in present time.
It's hard to describe, but the story is actually engrossing and while not believable at all, the basic mystery is a good one.
Definitely recommend.
