First things first: why is there not a book about Sidi Mubarak Bombay, the real explorer. Yes yes archival limitations sure. But still. In comparison to SMB, the story about Speke's egoistic dismantling of Richard Burton's dream is a squabble of saddening proportions.
Millard is a steady hand and a thoughtful guide through this history that lives up to the subtitle - there is courage and betrayal in many instances! - while residing still in the quasi-colonial viewpoint of European ventures guised as discoveries. Despite that hangover, strongly recommended.
