Les Misérables by Victor Hugo
1.0

Save yourself the misery and just read the abridged version!!!!!! Please. Did editors exist when Victor Hugo wrote this?! I wish that brevity had been more popular. The character’s internal and spoken dialogue is so excessive. This book is 35% plot and 55% long winded history laced with opinions or unnecessary lengthy descriptions, and 10% random opinionated tirade. After a chapter long tirade about how much the author hates slang and a whole section focusing on the entire history of the Paris sewer system, I really started to care less about the resolution of the actual storyline. Honestly, the characters weren’t that intriguing. The plot was so drawn out that very little of it felt meaningful. Yes, we get it, Jean ValJean suffered unnecessarily for a petty crime. Marius just kind of sucks and he struggles to forgive anyone for presumed wrongs. Cosette and Marius’s love story is merely young love at first sight…. Boring. Javert’s “redemption arc” is hardly an arc since he is unchanging right up until the moment where he does something mildly decent, which he immediately regrets doing. Proud of myself for completing this. But wow, there are so many better books than this. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more if I was a simp for French history.
