Guarded by the Marshal by Kennedy L. Mitchell

5.0

This is the first book in this series, and my first book from this author.

Rachel Smith is our FMC, and her life has been far from easy. This has made her prey to unspeakable evil, and taken away a precious part of herself, and lose a few months of her life. Her first dealing with Max Williams is in court, where, following her testimony, she will be handed over into the care of US Marshalls until the day comes she is entered into the Witness Protection Programme. But, from the moment they both see each other, it is like two lost souls find themselves.

Max is ex Military, and is also battling with an ex wife to see the two most precious people in his world, his daughters. So, between jobs, he medicates himself in very unhealthy ways, as a way to cope with his own demons that invade his sleep. He finds himself drawn to Rachel, and this becomes more apparent as time goes on, to keep her safe, until she, potentially, as to return to court again, or he prepares her for her new identity, her new life. There is some heavy subjects covered, and the evil that Rachel is trying to escape, feels fit to try and take her, but Max is not going to have that happen, no matter the cost.

There are many special moments, but the ones where Max helps Rachel "heal" and show her that what she had taken from her is nothing like it actually is, are spicy as all hell, but also healing for them both. I absolutely loved the fact that Max constantly stuffed up his words, engaged is mouth before his brain, or threw his idea of "humour" into many situations, only to find his match in Rachel.

I liked this first book in this series, and the writing held you captive, and was easy to read. The light hearted moments cut thru the dark, and humanised both Max and Rachel. With heavy subjects covered, Kennedy has done an amazing job to cover sensitive subjects. Highly recommend.
