Absolutely loved Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes – even though I quickly learned I'd been pronouncing her name wrong the whole time because it's Evvie as in Chevy! Who knew?
I scarfed this one down in less than 24 hours, putting off making dinner and doing laundry to finish the story. I loved the characters and thought it was a wonderful depiction of small town life, in which I was totally immersed. Evvie is funny and her flaws are real and (spoiler alert!) her flirtatious relationship with Dean made me smile and become both a little giddy and a little jealous. Add Dean to the long list of book boyfriends I think wistfully about.
I also thought Holmes' slow reveal of Evvie's emotionally abusive relationship (at least for Evvie, even if the reader has already figured it out) was a really wise insight into how easy it is for victims to not even realize what's happening to them as it's happening, especially if it's been going on for so long, which Evvie's abuse has.
