Secondborn
by Amy A. Bartol
This book was objectively bad. The world-building was a cross between The Hunger Games and Divergent, which wasn’t itself the problem, but the nouns and proper nouns given to objects, people, and places didn’t make any logical sense and weren’t used with enough frequency to help decipher their meanings (though I didn’t finally find the glossary at the end, I’m still mad about it).
This book was also all action and no plot. A bunch of things happened during the course of the story, but I still have no idea what this books overall plot arc is supposed to be.
All of the characters suck. And their interactions suck. I don’t understand any of the characters: their thoughts, feelings, motivations are still all a mystery to me.
The writing. It’s not good. I found myself cringing constantly.
I’m invested enough to give it two stars and go find the spoilers for books 2 and 3 so I can be done reading this series.
