Mad About You by Mhairi McFarlane
3.0
challenging emotional tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix

If you typically enjoy light rom com reads, this author might not be for you. Her premises and cover art look like they'll fit that genre, but I find her stories to be written around messy friendships and there's always at least one supremely toxic male character. In this one you have the FMC who has just left a serious relationship because she was basically trapped into a proposal in front of her toxic no longer in laws. In looking to find a new place to live, she finds a room at a house with a male roommate that she agrees to without meeting him. It turns out he is the runaway groom from the wedding that takes place during the opening chapter where she was the photographer. There is a lot of soul searching on both their parts while they cohabitate. She's forced to examine her past toxic relationships and how they got her where she is now. At one point, she makes a decision that brings her most toxic ex back into her life, which threatens to ruin her livelihood. At least in this book, the toxic character gets his ass served to him after she and other females band together. While the author still touched on heavier topics in this book, there was enough lightness that it wasn't as uncomfortable to read as some of her others. It's definitely not my favorite book, but I certainly enjoyed it more than some of her other ones.
