I disliked all the characters and felt bad the main character seemed 2 dimension. The scientist even made fun of the main character for being "nerdy". 
"I lift things" just made him very unlikeable as a main hero.

Kagu was the worst tho 
He complained about not going on the mission soon enough only to complain that he should have stayed back at base. 

The book could also be a lot better without the modern day references.
