Junkyard Cats by Khristine Hvam, Faith Hunter

3.0

Junkyard Cats is a cool take on a post-apocalyptic world that is no nonsense and action packed. Shining Smith (yes, that is her name) still lives after a nano-bot bug alien invasion, though she is no longer strictly human. She resides in the junkyard passed down to her from her father, hiding plenty of secrets she knows many people would like to know. But life here has been easy, until her only friend turns up dead with a note warning her of a coming attack.

Though I enjoyed listening to this, I was left just wanting more! It is quite short, so I figured there would be some things left untied and things that weren't quite explained. The story jumps right in without a backstory explained, which worked for the type of story this was. There was almost non-stop action during this story, and I thought the concept was pretty cool. But there were just one too many things that were kind of just assumed that the reader would pick up and understand, or weren't even really addressed. I really enjoyed the elements of the story, the different type of alien invasion, what it did to Shining, her cat pack, and the sassy AIs. I really liked the idea of a junkyard setting, since it seems like a really interesting place to keep secrets pretty much in plain sight. But I just wanted more from it. I really think that Faith Hunter has something she could really work with here and expand upon. I would love it if it became not just an Audible Original story, but a true book or series.

If you are subscribed to Audible and have yet to pick your two Audible Original books for the month, I would recommend Junkyard Cats because it's fast paced, interesting, and you can really get into the world.
