Batman Beyond, Volume 1: Brave New Worlds by Dan Jurgens
4.0
I obtained this book from a recent giveaway and I thank those who ran it for doing so.
To be honest, though, I had entered the giveaway for this book for my friend and he read the book. So the rest of this review is from him:
"Batman Beyond - Brave New Worlds, Volume 1" is the conclusion to the DCU "Future's End" arc where Tim Drake must fill in for the late Terry McGinnis and save the world from Brother Eye. Having watched Batman Beyond in my younger years there was a lot of nostalgia when I started reading. However, having not read "Future's End" I was a little confused at first because I felt that I was missing a few major events that led to the world being in the post-apocalyptic state that it is, but nonetheless it was a good enough read as a standalone story for the reintroduction of Batman Beyond into the DCU.
As I read, the first thing to stand out was the art. It's dynamic, easy to follow, and while some may not appreciate it, I enjoyed the use of duotone panels. That being said, I feel the action scenes themselves left a little to be desired, as there weren't any that gave me pure adrenaline fueled excitement. The story itself also left more to be desired with the inner conflict of Tim Drake trying to live up to the mantle of Batman with my issue being that it had little to do with Batman aside from the name and suit. The pacing was okay and the final confrontation, though explosive, didn't quite deliver the impact I was looking for. Overall "Batman Beyond - Brave New Worlds, Volume 1" is a great read for an unseasoned comic book fan such as myself."
