I read this as part of a compilation including A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Dubliners: https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/73c83001-9ed4-4efe-b1be-530514fa4b57
A Portrait was quite interesting. I can see the connections between Joyce’s writing style and everything after it, but at the same time, I didn’t find it very engaging. Joyce writes beautifully but, because the story was mostly about Christianity and religious crises, I couldn’t relate very much as I have never been religious. It’s given me a much greater understanding of religious trauma but, overall, I think I would rather read more McCarthy. I an excited to read Dubliners though, and I think Ulysses is a little bit more achievable now that I’ve read some Joyce before.
