The Suffragette Scandal
by Courtney Milan
Like the Heiress Effect, I feel that plotwise, this one stuck to the formula a bit more than the other books in the series. However, this one used the formula better, in ways that really worked in the setting. The setting, particularly the time period, were showcased the best in this book and it's a book that really could not have taken place in any other time.
And so it has a stronger plot than Heiress Effect. It also has stronger characters, with two very compelling leads. It's been very interesting to see Free's development throughout the series and she is a great lead character here. I also am really glad that Courtney Milan decided to go a different route with Edward than she originally intended (read the Author's Notes for more info on that) because he works really well too. For me, the best romances are the ones where both sides learn and grow because they knew each other (and once again, I acknowledge the looming spectre of Pride & Prejudice, which may very well have started that exactly scenerio), and that's definitely true for these two. The learning is a lot more on Edward's side for this one but one of my favourite scenes is when he goes off on Free when she implies that he should torture someone for information.
The last two full novels of this series dealt both dealt with some very serious issues and ended up being meatier than I expected. For me, the Countess Conspiracy works a bit better than this one, this one is pretty amazing too and just makes me love the whole series that much more.
