The Hidden Oracle
by Rick Riordan
DID NOT FINISH
Okay, so to be fair, I had a bad attitude about Riordan from the get-go. I would have chosen The Lightning Thief to 5-minute-read and judge him by, but we didn't have a copy at my branch, and I didn't care enough to place a hold on it. So my attitude is based on: the fact that Percy Jackson seems like such an obvious rip off of the Harry Potter phenomenon, and the fact that my mum already told me these books suck. So I didn't expect great things. Also the fact that these books are super popular made me sceptical. Turns out I was right to be.
So I obviously didn't read the whole thing, but it's pretty much what I expected. It's not horrible, it's fine, if kids want to read it, whatever, but it's not actually good. Certainly not good enough for adults to read and enjoy. Kind of a cute concept, Greek god punished by being sent to earth as a mortal teenage boy, but it's just trying too hard for me. Here's what it is: Rick Riordan doesn't take this book seriously. He wouldn't read this. He's writing "for kids". JK Rowling isn't writing "for kids", she's writing her story. I know it's unfair to compare everything to Harry Potter, but if you want to write in the world of epic JF fantasy worlds, you're inviting it. Just didn't care. The Nancy Drew book made me read more than I planned to, to find out why the character was covered in blood. This one, I read less of than I planned. He's too impressed with himself.
