Nobody's Normal: How Culture Created the Stigma of Mental Illness by Roy Richard Grinker

5.0

“Stigma is a judgment that does not emanate from the person who is stigmatized, rather it comes from the stigmatizers, those who illuminate people who are suffering or deemed different with the harsh light of moral judgment and then seeing only the shadows they created, mistake them for reality. Shadows then travel with the stigmatized, and usually with their families too. They become an extension of the person, like a second self that can seem impossible to shake, and that the stigmatized themselves can also come to see as real. “

I don’t usually rate non-fiction, but I thought this book was phenomenal. The stigmas that are placed on mental health are extremely harmful, this book sheds light on them in comical tones which brings to light how many controversial practices are still in place around the world because the stigma is still heavy on mental health. Great read!
