I am so happy that I was able to read this book as soon as it came in the mail. I have been always eager to know more about Maverick prior to his daughter Star being born. This book of course deals with Star's dad from (The Hate U Give) Maverick is is eighteen years old and is in a gang called the "King Lords" where is father was once King of before he went to prison. Maverick throughout the book was also called Lil Don by his friends in the set. King is one of Mavericks main friends that always has his back. Now I loved the fact that this book was fast and never a dull/boring moment. After balling ball with his friends Maverick and his mom had to go to the paternity clinic for him to take a test because he had sex with a girl named Iesha who he really did not like but he only had sex with her because him and Lisa (which is girlfriend in this part of the book) broke up. He couldn't handle the break and so being young and dumb he pursued Iesha. Now after many months had passed it was brought to Mavericks attention that Iesha had a baby and it looks just like him. Now mind you as he is taking this paternity test, his best friend King is taking a test because Iesha is his girlfriend. As we all now that messes up friendships and once the test is done they are not as best of friends as they were before. So the test came back that King Jr is actually Mavericks son and just like that his life has changed. Now Maverick takes on his responsibility as a dad and he becomes real hands on with his son, which he changes his sons name to Seven, which means "perfection". Now as he is taking care of Seven he doesn't tell Lisa and so once he finally told Lisa the news she was not happy and broke with Maverick. Maverick now is upset and still wants Lisa in his life. Though as he is trying to sort everything out his cousin Dre told him now is the time to stop slinging and get a real job because he now has a son to take care of. Now his cousin Dre is also a King Lord, but he looks at Maverick like a little brother. So Maverick took what he said into consideration and stopped slinging and got a legit job. But right when Maverick was stepping into the right path and getting his life together his cousin Dre was shot in the head and Lisa is pregnant. What do you think Maverick ends up doing? Does h go back to slinging? Do Maverick and Lisa get back together? All the answers are in the book and I definitely recommend you read to find out the answers. This book was amazing and he had me cry on multiple occasions. This book is a great read!!!
