After Alice Everlys' grandmother suffers a fall and needs a little cheering up, she decides it’s the perfect time for both of them to take a trip back to Barry’s Bay. The lake had been the place she had the best summer of her childhood and the place where one unexpected photo of the boy in the yellow boat from the house across the lake would reveal her love for photography. Charlie Florek and his brother Sam grew up at the lake, but because of his job, he has been living in the city for years, only spending a few days a year at his family home in Barry’s Bay. But this summer he has taken an unexpected sabbatical from his job and his summer plan is a few weeks of rest and relaxation at the lake. Alice Everly is a an unexpected but not unwanted addition to those plans.
After finishing Every Summer After, I immediately went and got One Golden Summer because even though I loved Percy and Sam and their story, there was something about Charlie Florek that intrigued me and I needed to know more. One Golden Summer was so good, like I absolutely loved Charlie and Alice. The fact that she always thought about the boy in the yellow boat, and it turns out to be Charlie, the man that helped her set up the cottage she and her grandmother are going to stay in during the summer ✨CINEMA✨. Invisible String by Taylor Swift and Golden by Harry Styles kept playing in my head as I read this book. I really liked that they became good friends and later on explored the possibility of becoming something more. These characters are in their thirties, and it was so cute to see them get back that childish glee of liking someone for the first time. They are not perfect characters by any means. Charlie is having trouble coping with his own mortality because he is afraid of reaching the age where his father died, and he chooses to avoid those feelings and Alice has been scorned by love before, so she’s afraid of opening up, but watching them bring down their walls for each other was beautiful. Love Charlie and Alice together. A wonderful summer book! Go read it!!
