I Was Born For This is a compulsively readable YA book filled with heartwarming friendships and flawed, relatable characters. I loved this so much I read it in just over a day. Alice Oseman clearly has a gift for writing relatable, messy and above all, extremely loveable characters, as all of her books that I have read, including this one, feature the best characters. I loved everything about this book, with the exception of the fact that the ending was slightly ambiguous, and I tend to like endings with a bit more finality to tie up the story rather than ones that leave things open to the reader like this one. Though it does leave room for a sequel, which I would love!
A few other things that are awesome about this book in list form because making coherent reviews for books that I love is hard:
- Bisexual, gay and trans rep
- Black and South Asian rep
- Hijabi MC
- Characters that you want to give hugs to
- Discussions around fame
- Mental health as a central theme
- Discussions around fandoms, perception vs. reality and obsession
- Strong friendships and group dynamics
