Emerett Has Never Been in Love by Anyta Sunday

3.0

When I first started reading Emerett Has Never Been In Love by Anyta Sunday, I thought it would be exactly what I wanted out of an Emma pastiche. I bought this book with the intention of buying every other volume in Sunday’s Jane Austen retelling series, but this book soured me on the prospect of doing so after it took me nearly four months to actually finish the first one.

The writing wasn’t the issue, either. I think Sunday has a very easy-going sort of writing style that is easy for readers to connect to. The problem for me was the harebrained story. I remember Emma was a rather frustrating book, but I also thought it was a fun sort of frustrating because of the humor injected by Austen. It was a commentary on the romantic entanglements of the time period. It worked.

This book was hardly as fun. The only realistic thing about the book was the fact that every hot gay guy in town knew about each other. I guess I was hoping it would be a commentary on how rough dating in an insular gay community is, but it wasn’t. Lake was also not a great lead at all. I wasn’t rooting for him at any point in this story. Knight was the only sensible person the the entire book, which I suppose was also fairly accurate to Emma.

I do intend to read more of Sunday’s books, though. I just won’t be rushing to get them anytime soon…I have way too many other fantastic LGBTQ+ books to read before I cycle back to the Love, Austen series.
