The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson

5.0

There is so much to unpack here but I'll start by saying this is the best retelling of Carrie I have ever read. This is the second book I've read by Tiffany D. Jackson. I read Smoke Out earlier this month and I couldn't tell it was the same author going by writing style alone. Everything from the tone, style, and writing was unlike what I experienced from Smoke Out. I am absolutely blown away and impressed. I'm definitely checking out more of her books.

On to The Weight of Blood: I loved the style it was written, part podcast, flashback, second-hand accounts, and new cast retelling. It added to the story's suspense, urgency, and glimpses into the thought of the overall cast. My heart goes out to Maddie and the horrible things done to her from childhood up to prom. Everyone failed Maddie. I hated the way Maddie was treated, how the school treated its black population, and how they held their racist views behind the thinly veiled excuse of "tRaDiTiOn ".

This was an absolutely fantastic read that had me foaming at the mouth. 10/10 would recommend.
