The Future of Another Timeline by Annalee Newitz
3.0

I found this book to be a strange experience, because there were sections that I cared about utterly and loved, and others where I just couldn't get invested. The personal felt real and vivid, but the political seemed difficult to fathom - the ways in which action was supposed to translate into cause-and-effect relationships were intentionally vague and obscure to the characters, who could only hope their choices would have the right effects in the future/present, but that made for a difficult effort from the reader, who had to connect the dots herself (and I didn't always care as much as the book meant for me to care). I found the POV characters to be complex and engaging, and the worldbuilding was fun and interesting (even if the future least of all), but the plot just didn't bring them together in a way that would wow me as much as the other elements of the novel deserved.

I'm glad I've read it, as it was really interesting (and the parts I liked I liked plenty), but I don't see myself re-reading it.
