The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata

The marketing for this book should read: Two dysfunctional characters who can’t love themselves try to pull it together to love each other.

Honestly, this was a FOMO book for me. I had heard of the new genre of sports romance and thought I would check it out. This is what I learned:
1. No dates in two years because you are exhausted from working seven days a week as a personal assistant? Hey, just quit your job, drop 15 pounds, and start training for a marathon.
2. Guy needs something illegal and you are $150k down in student loans? Poor people don’t have the luxury of morals.
3. A man threatening to beat someone up is considered sexy. Are you kidding me?
4. A woman internally dialogues for 20,000 words how excessively well built her ex-boss is. How is this anything but a lust-filled rant? If this was gender reversed, women would be throwing the book across the room.

This is not grumpy and sunshine. This is “I am too focused on myself and my goals to recognize anyone else” and “l am so pathetic based on my upbringing that I will put up with any behavior.”

So I gave this three stars because the author kept me reading till the very last page. I still don’t know how that happened. I do know I have finished my first and last sports romance.
