Beautiful character focused story that meanders through the life of a person yearning to find their place amidst the conflict of societal expectations and marginalization. While the subject matter of a biracial homosexual coming of age in 1960s England may not be relatable to some, the internal dialogue of a person navigating life through struggles and one’s own growth should find purchase with all readers. Stunning writing, with beautifully complex characters developed through subtlety rather than brute force.
